The Art of Songwriting - 7 p.m.
135 Western Avenue
Albany, NY
Price: Free

Very honored to be part of "The Art of Songwriting," a discussion and performance also featuring Taina Asili and Bryan Thomas, moderated by Greg Haymes.

Some of the Capital Region’s most acclaimed singer-songwriters will talk about the challenges and pleasures of their work.

Taina Asili, musician and activist, is the leader of local AfroLatin fusion group, La Banda Rebelde. Billboard featured her in a list of “11 Songs of Protest & Resistance by Latino Artists,” and The Huffington Post named her #2 on a list of “12 Freedom Fighting Bands To Get You Through the Trump Years.” Her songs are frequently featured on Democracy Now!

Michael Eck, writer, musician and host of WAMC’s American Roots Series, has produced four solo albums and is a member of several local bands.

The Village Voice said, “Somewhere between lovelorn cowpoke and sardonic folkster is nose-pierced Albany NY dad Michael Eck, whose sharp lyrics and quick-witted guitar reflect all over like a broken mirror and shine with liberation like a tossed-aside wedding ring.”

Greg Haymes, writer, music critic, and creator of the Albany arts and music blog, Nippertown, cofounded the legendary Albany “post-Hippie” jugband, Blotto, whose video “I Wanna Be a Lifeguard,” was played during MTV’s very first day on the air, and kept in frequent rotation for many years thereafter.

Bryan Thomas (“Dr. Buggy Jive”) evokes Prince and Lenny Kravitz, but with a strong literary hook. The Times Union named him “Best Male Singer-Songwriter” for his 1999 acoustic hip-hop debut, "Radio Plastic Jennifer," and his soul rock epic "Ones and Zeros" was Metroland’s 2002 “Album of the Year.” His new music video, “Stole My Stealing from Eliot,” a quirky homage to T. S. Eliot shot in London, Paris and Albany, is available on YouTube.

Excited to fete Pete! I'll be joined by Paul "Bowtie" Jossman of Ramblin Jug Stompers and Drank the Gold (Oona Grady and James Gascoyne).

By fate and luck, I got to know Pete in the last years of his long life. We'll share stories and songs and smiles, while poking through his catalog and singing songs by friends like Woody Guthrie and Lead Belly. If you don't sing along, you don't get cake!

The Low Beat
Dylan 78 - It's The Low Beat folks, it starts when it starts
335 Central Ave
Albany, NY
518.432.6572
Price: Money

Dale Metzger's invited me to participate in the annual Bob Dylan birthday bash for the umpteenth time. How could i say no!?

I'll be singing some songs from The Times They Are A-Changin' album, but not that one. Why? Because that rekkid is from the year of my birth. And because it's brilliant.

And because it gives me wonderful reason to play with my dear friends Bob Buckley and Sten Isachsen.

Dylan. The father of us all. Salute!

Words of Wisdom

"I believe songs save lives, that it's a worthwhile thing to be doing. Not just the big songs of life, love and death, but the little ones, silly ones, blue ones, one timers, jokes, dirges, work songs, romantic numbers, dreams, painting songs, rockabilly, child songs. It's all good sharing experience, strength and hope through music." Peter Case
